Job Summary:

As a director, this position works closely with the pastor in planning worship services.  This position is also responsible for developing and growing a comprehensive music program to include choirs, hand bells, and ensembles for all age groups in accordance with policies, standards, as well as guidelines and regulations governing our church.  Grand Avenue’s goal is to offer ministry opportunities for individuals to become involved in the life of the church while growing in their faith.  Active participation in the life of Grand Avenue UMC is expected.  The director will be required to work twenty hours a week including Sundays, Wednesdays and any special worship services and programs.  Office hours are required.





Education and/or Experience:

A bachelor’s degree is preferred.  The director must possess adequate skill and experience in vocal and choral music.  Successful experience in a similar environment of three to five years or more is preferred.  Combinations of alternate education and experience will be considered.

Technical Skills

The director should demonstrate proficient skill and musicality in playing the piano and in directing different age groups in vocal choirs and in bell choirs.  The ability to play other musical instruments is preferred.


Computer Skills

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office is required.



1.      Organize and regularly direct choirs at children, youth, and adult levels as the need demands.

2.      Take the lead in continuous recruitment of members in the various choirs and bell groups.

3.      Be responsible for coordinating the overall music program at GAUMC including special events such as Vacation Bible School, cantatas, in conjunction with the pastor and worship committee.

4.      Be responsible for the purchase and care of all music for choral, bells, and instruments.

5.      Be responsible for seeing that all church musical instruments are properly maintained and tuned - in consultation with the organist, the Pastor and the Chair of the Board of Trustees.

6.      Coordinate instrumental and vocal music for funerals being held in the church.

7.      Coordinate music for weddings being held in the church.

8.      Participate in district and state music and hand bell festivals, especially those for children and youth choirs.

9.      Give assistance to dramatic productions and other programs being offered by the church, especially those given by children and youth of the church.

10.  Be responsible for arranging suitable transportation for all out-of town trips for choirs-enlist assistance as needed.

11.  Be an ex-officio member of, and make regular reports to, the Administrative Council and the Worship Committee.

12.  Communicate all music information to appropriate staff for bulletins and publications.

13.  Prepare and administer the music department ministry budget.
